What Do You Do...

When helping someone may be just hurting them more?

Someone asked us for $100. We don't mind and we would have given this person the money, but (as a recovering alcoholic and drug user) we knew that he'd gone on a bender the night before.

Do you give money to someone who you think may just be slowly killing themselves?

  1. It is so hard to be in that situation. And no, I wouldn't give them money if I thought they would use it for drugs or alcohol.

    There is no easy answer.

  2. No, I don't. If they are hungry..I will see that they have food, but I will NOT give money to someone who is going to use it for drugs, alcohol, etc.

  3. I'm afraid that it isn't really "help" if it isn't going to benefit them in the long run. They may see it as helpful, but when deep down you know it isn't right... well..it isn't.

I'm sorry you are in such a difficult situation. You are doing what you can just by being there for them.

  4. No that isn't help. You pose an excellent question...though...one we should all think about.

  5. I think the Holy Spirit will direct you in this. As long as you do whatever He tells you to, you will have peace about it.

  6. If I had it to give then I would pray over the money and hope that God uses it for good. You just never know how He will make it work for His good!

  7. A difficult choice and obviously depends on the person and situation. Sometimes the best thing to do is to let the person hit rock bottom so they can see the damage they're causing themselves and those who care about them. Until they decide they need to change, they'll keep making the same mistakes.

  8. No, I couldn't justify giving someone money if they were just going to use it for harm. If they came to me "hungry" then perhaps take them out for dinner, or buy them supplies they need, etc.
